1. The Golden Rule
Do: Make sure you always (and we mean always) remove your makeup before hitting the sheets. The skin needs to breathe overnight. And makeup prevents that, as leaving it on overnight clogs the pores which may cause blemishes and/or blackheads. Don’t possess a makeup remover? Just put some olive oil on a cotton pad and gently massage the oil onto your face to get rid of the makeup and dirt. Don’t: Forget that exfoliation is indispensable. At least once or twice a week, exfoliate your skin to remove the layers of dead skin, sure to leave you with a more healthy glow and brighter skin. You can also apply a paste of walnut in powder form with yogurt to exfoliate your skin, as the antioxidants present in walnuts help remove dirt and promote radiant skin. Never forget to exfoliate your skin and remove the makeup before calling it a night. 2. Sun and Skin Do: Apply sunscreen with SPF of at least 15 that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Since a lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems, you have to protect your skin from the sun. Make sure the label reads ‘noncomedogenic’ or ‘nonacnegenic’ so that the product does not tend to block pores. Don’t: Skip the sunscreen, whether it's cloudy or cold outside (no excuses). If you’re heading to a beach or around reflective surfaces like snow or ice, lather your skin up with some more sunscreen with SPF of at least 30. Sunscreen with SPF of at least 15 that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. 3. You are What You Eat Do: Keep a note of what you put on your plate. Eat fresh fruits, greens, sufficient protein and vitamins. A diet rich in vitamin C and low in fats and sugar promotes radiant skin. Consider a low-sugar diet, which can keep insulin levels down, allowing cells to maintain a healthy balance. "Don’t: Eat spicy and fermented foods, salt, citrus fruits, fried food. Instead favour blander foods such as rice, oatmeal and applesauce”, advises American author and Ayurvedic physician, Vasant Lad, in The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies. (Also Read: Turmeric Powder for Beauty: How To Use it For Your FaceAnd Skin)Fresh fruits and greens is what healthy skin needs. 4. Sweat It Out! Do: Exercise regularly. Running, jogging and yoga will give your body the necessary blood circulation, and also accelerate the cleansing process of your entire body. You will notice a glow on your face after working out. Racing against time? Just take a brisk walk around the block. Don’t: Skip skincare before and after a workout. Apply a toner to help minimize oil production before heading out. Exfoliate after, and then apply shea butter or olive oil to moisturize the skin. Running, jogging and yoga will accelerate the cleaning process of your body. 5. Beauty Sleep Do: Try to sleep at least 8 hours every night. If you don’t get enough shut eye, your skin gets tired just like you - it sags and you get bags. So don’t risk it. You can also apply honey on your face twice or thrice a week to naturally soothe and heal your skin. “Don’t: Forget to wash and moisturize your face before going to bed”, recommends Dr. Rahul Nagar, Dermatologist, Max Hospitals. “For dry skin, use milder cleansers that are free from alcohol. Apply lots of moisturizer, and avoid hot water as it dries out the skin excessively.” Never forget to wash your face before sleeping and moisturize well. 6. H2O to The Rescue Do: Hydrate yourself. Drink lots of water daily, at least 8 glasses if not more. Also, eats fruits and vegetables that have a high water content such as watermelon, cucumber, orange, strawberry, grapefruit and cantaloupe. Ayurvedic physician, Vasant Lad recommends to “drink water from a blue coloured bottle”, since it has a cooling effect. Don’t: Ignore rose water. It helps prevent and reduce eye puffiness in the morning, maintains pH balance and naturally hydrates your skin if you spritz it on during the day. Rose water maintains pH balance and naturally hydrates the skin. 7. Goodbye Acne “Do: Wash your face with warm water, three times a day, and gently massage your face in circular motions, ensuring that the cleanser contains alpha hydroxyl acid or beta hydroxyl acid. Face packs that contain multani mitti (fuller’s earth) work really well too. After cleansing, pat dry and apply a lotion which contains benzoyl peroxide”, suggests Dr. Zaheer Ahmed, Dermatologist, Max Hospitals. Benzoyl peroxide appears to be effective due to its antibacterial actions. Don’t: Pop pimples because it can lead to more swelling, redness, and even scarring. Feel a pimple is on its way? Just clean the area with rose water, and place a chilled green tea bag for 10 minutes. Also, if you wear glasses or sunglasses, make sure you clean them frequently to keep oil from clogging the pores around your eyes and nose. Never pop your pimples. Use rose water or chilled green tea bags. 8. Go Back to Your Roots Do: Use Ayurvedic scrubs to nourish the skin, and help it breathe better. Luckily for you, everything you need is already in your kitchen. 2 tbsp chickpea flour, ½ tsp turmeric powder, a pinch of camphor and sandalwood with some rose water/milk/water is your perfect skincare pack. Yes, the secrets of beauty lies in ancient Ayurveda. Don’t: Neglect the basics. Make Sudarshan Kriya your beauty mantra. Yes, it’s that easy. Just breathing right could rid you of spots and pimples. Nidhi Gureja, Art of Living, says “Sudarshan Kriya is a breathing technique which incorporates specific natural rhythms of the breath that harmonize the body, mind and emotions. This helps releasing accumulated stresses, and each individual’s experience is different.” Sudarshan Kriya is a breathing technique which incorporates specific natural rhythms that helps in releasing accumulated stresses. 9. Spa Day Everyday? Do: Have a regular skin care regimen. “For dry skin, use a fresh cherry mask. Apply the pulp of fresh cherries on your face before going to bed. Leave for 15 minutes and wash with lukewarm water”, adds American author Vasant Lad. Don’t: Forget to pamper yourself. A gentle facial massage with oils could work wonders. Depending on your skin type, choose oils from mustard, coconut, almond or Kumkadi as they are excellent nourishing agents which help to get glowing skin. Better still – switch on some soothing instrumental music. After 20 minutes, what do you have? Beautiful skin and a relaxed you. Pamper yourself occasionally with spa treatments. 10. Healthy Habits Do: Take out time for yourself, and try to avoid stress as much as possible. Have you ever noticed that when you are stressed, you tend to break out more? This is because stress causes your body to produce cortisol and other hormones, making the skin more oily. Practice stress management techniques like breathing exercises, yoga and meditation. The more you meditate, the more you radiate. Don’t: Neglect your jawline and facial muscles. For just 5 minutes a day, perform a few facial exercises. You can jut out your lower lip in such a way that wrinkles are created on the chin, then lower your chin to your chest. Another exercise that works wonders is to look up towards the ceiling and pout. It stretches out the muscles making the skin more firm. “18 till I die”, why not? The more you meditate, the more you radiate. You’re dressed to perfection, yet you need something to complete the look. Your smile! While we spend so much time and energy on honing our bodies and looks, we forget to express our inner joy and happiness. “Keeping a smile on your face will help maintain the tone of your facial muscles and skin. People may say you look 10 years youngerthan you are!”, adds the Ayurvedic physician, Vasant Lad. Source from http://food.ndtv.com

11/14/2017 15 Things Women With Perfect Skin Do Every DayWaking up flawless is all in a few key steps.Read NowEveryone knows at least one woman with seemingly perfect skin. Every time you see her glowing face, you think, Seriously, how does she do it? What kind of magical procedures is she getting? Which expensive creams is she using? Here's the thing: Her secret is simple — she has flawless skin because she's nailed the best daily routine. Another secret? So can you.
1. She uses the correct cleanser for her skin type."For oily or acne prone skin, a salycylic gel or benzoyl peroxide wash works great," says Dr. Ava Shamban, a dermatologist in Santa Monica. "For dry mature skin, use either a moisturizing glycolic or milky cleanser. For skin with brown spots or melasma, use a brightening wash, such as an alpha hydroxy acid cleanser." 2. She drinks the right liquids.Though it's tempting to grab a coffee the minute you wake up, Joanna Vargas, a skincare facialist in NYC, says choosing the right beverages can be a game changer. "Drink a shot of chlorophyll every morning to brighten, oxygenate, and hydrate your skin. Drinking chlorophyll also helps drain puffiness by stimulating the lymphatic system, so it's also good for cellulite." If you're not keen on downing a shot of the stuff, chlorophyll supplements can be found at many drugstores and health food stores. She also advised drinking green juices with lots of veggies in them: "It will transform your skin in a matter of days — and it helps oxygenate the skin and stimulates lymphatic drainage, so it's de-puffing, too." 3. She maintains a healthy diet."Your skin has a natural barrier to retain moisture, and essential to that is omega-3 fatty acid," Joanna Vargas advises. "Flax seeds on your salad or even walnuts will be an instant boost to your omega-3, thus increasing your skin's ability to hold onto moisture." And be sure to eat a diet low in foods with a high glycemic index (simple and complex carbohydrates). 4. She moisturizes every day and night."The best times to moisturize are right after you get out of the shower and right before you go to bed," explained Dr. Janet Prystowsky MD, an NYC-based dermatologist. Avoid lotions with heavy fragrances and be make sure you find a moisturizer gentle enough for every day use with zero irritation. 5. Her fingers never touch her face.Dr. Julia Tzu, an NYC-based dermatologist, says this is very important. It doesn't just spread bacteria and cause breakouts — it can lead to scarring, an increase in wrinkles, and even the flu. 6. She doesn't use too many products.Using more than one or two all at once is a big no-no, says Dr. Tzu. It can be harsh on the skin, resulting in more breakouts and clogged pores. 7. She wears sunscreen 365 days a year — rain or shine."Many people feel they only need to protect themselves on sunny days or when visiting the beach," says Dr. Debbie Palmer, a New York dermatologist. "But the truth is that we need to protect our skin even when we're driving a car, flying in an airplane, or running errands. It's the daily UV exposure that contributes to the visible signs of aging." What kind of sunscreen is best? Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or greater — and remember that it needs to be reapplied every 2 hours. 8. She hydrates — in every way possible.Every skin expert we spoke to emphasized the importance of hydration. "A lack of water means less radiance and more sag," says Dr. Mona Gohara, a dermatologist in Connecticut. She suggests choosing products (cleansing, moisturizing, and anti-aging) that have hydrating formulas. And, of course, drink around eight glasses of water a day. 9. She avoids direct heat exposure.Don't just watch out for the sun — getting too close to heaters and fireplaces can also wreak havoc on your skin. "It causes inflammation \and collagen breakdown. I recommend staying at least ten feet away," explains Dr. Palmer. So next time you're roasting chestnuts or s'mores over an open fire, take a step back. 10. She exfoliates a couple times per week."We lose 50 million skin cells a day, and without a little extra nudge, they may hang around leaving the skin looking sullen," says Dr. Gohara. To fight this, you should "choose a product that is pH neutral so it doesn't dry as it exfoliates." And don't just stop with your face — the skin on your body needs exfoliation, too. 11. She doesn't just eat her vitamins.A balanced diet is important, but there's more than one way to give your skin vitamins. There's also topical antioxidants, which are serums and creams that contain ingredients that nourish the skin. "These can really help to repair the skin from sun damage and they also have natural sunscreen properties," says Dr. Palmer. Not sure how to use them? The best time to apply them is right after cleansing, or they can be layered under your sunscreen for added protection. 12. She cleans her makeup brushes regularly. To fight infection and clogged pores, Dr. Prystowsky recommends washing concealer and foundation brushes once a week. For brushes you use around your eyes, she recommends twice per month, and for any other brushes, once a month is fine. Here's how: Put a drop of a mild shampoo into the palm of your hand. Wet the bristles with lukewarm water. Then, massage the bristles into your palm to distribute the shampoo into the brush. Avoid getting the metal part of the brush wet/or the base of the brush hairs because the glue could soften and the bristles could fall out. Rinse the shampoo out and squeeze out the water with a towel. Lay the brushes on their side with the bristles hanging off the edge of the counter to dry. 13. She knows that protection doesn't stop at sunscreen. We're talking SPF makeup, sunglasses, and broad-brimmed hats. "Preventing sun damage is a million times better for your skin than treating it after the fact," says Dr. Prystowsky. 14. Her skincare routine is easy to follow."Fad products and fancy ingredients are fun to try, and sometimes they work well," says Dr. Prystowsky, "but usually they're off the shelves just as quickly as they're on them." Find a cleanser and moisturizer that you know work for you, and keep them at the core of your routine. 15. She sleeps well. It's not just about getting eight hours a night. Skin will also benefit from regularly using clean silk pillowcases. "The material glides easily and prevents creasing and wrinkles,"says Jesleen Ahluwalia, M.D., a dermatologist from Spring Street Dermatology in New York City."Silk is also easier on hair — it helps avoid tangles and breakage." Better hair and skin while you sleep? Yes, please. Source from http://www.goodhousekeeping.com Do you know? Only SPF/Medibac products have expiry dates printed by USA for dermalogica products? "Removing your makeup can make the difference between beautiful, glowing skin and a complexion that looks dull and has clogged pores," says Debra B. Luftman, M.D, a dermatologist in Los Angeles for Simple skincare. Plus, while you're sleeping, "makeup can get pushed deeper into your pores, leading to acne," explains NYC dermatologist Francesca Fusco, M.D.
Another factor you might not take into account: Some dead skin cells are meant to shed every day, but having makeup on 24/7 can cause them to stick to the skin's surface. "This can also lead to breakouts and exacerbate fine lines," explains Dr. Fusco. To remove makeup quickly yet effectively without rallying to wash your face, use a cotton pad soaked in a gentle cleanser, like Simple Skincare Micellar Cleansing Water. With a blend of purified water and vitamin B3, it helps wipe away makeup in seconds — no rinsing required. 2. Use a ton of TLC to remove your eye makeup. "The skin around your eyes is the thinnest, most delicate skin on your face," says Dr. Fusco. So if you tug too roughly when removing your eye makeup, your skin can stretch out over time and fine lines can become more noticeable. Instead, use light, downward motions to wipe away your shadow, liner, and mascara, and opt for a non-greasy eye makeup removing formula that won't irritate skin and contains ingredients known to soothe skin such as vitamins B5 and E. Try Simple Skincare Eye Make-Up Remover Pads. 3. Drink plenty of water morning to night. And not just when you're hitting the gym or you're super thirsty (if you get to that point, you're most likely already dehydrated). Hydration — inside and out — is key to keeping your skin radiant. Wondering how much to drink? Eight 8-ounce glasses is still the recommended daily minimum, says the Mayo Clinic, so drink up for gorgeous, fully hydrated, flake-free skin. 4. Add an antioxidant serum to your daily routine. Consider these free-radical-fighting formulas your gateway to anti-agers. "UV light is still able to inflict damage on your skin even if you're wearing sunscreen," says Julie Karen, M.D, a dermatologist in NYC. "But if you layer a serum containing antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, underneath your SPF, your skin is more likely repair the damage as it occurs, preventing the onset of brown spots and fine lines prematurely." Try DermaDoctor Kakadu C Serum with vitamins C and E, ferulic acid, and kakadu plum. 5. Use a face cream and sunscreen combo every day. Even the five minutes you spend in the sun running into the mall or work each day add up. "People often only think to use sunscreen when they're out for an extended period of time, but even incidental exposure every day over a few years causes brown spots and fine lines to show up earlier," explains Dr. Fusco. So, 365 days a year, regardless of the season, use a face cream with SPF 15 or higher (try Simple Skincare Protecting Light Moisturizer SPF15), then apply your makeup, says Dr. Luftman. She suggests adding dots on your forehead, cheeks, chin, down the front of your neck (and both ears if your hair is up) to ensure that all exposed skin is properly protected. 6. Always sleep on a clean pillowcase. "Your skin can pick up dirt and bacteria, traces of makeup, dead skin cells, saliva, and hair product residue from a pillowcase that hasn't been washed," explains Dr. Karen. So flip your pillow over once a week and wash it every two to avoid a buildup of these pore-clogging substances. 7. Never lay in a tanning bed. Hitting a booth, even a few times, can have irreversible effects, including DNA damage to skin cells. Your risk of forming melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, increases by 59 percent from using tanning beds and gets higher with each use, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. "Tanning beds accelerate the aging of skin through the breakdown of collagen and are proven to increase the risk of skin cancer," explains Dr. Fusco. "Women who are trying to achieve great skin should never tan." 8. Don't pick at your skin. Leave that pimple/blackhead/bump alone. As tempting as it can be, unless you've got a clear whitehead (that you can use two tissues to gently press out), it's more likely that you'll either drive bacteria farther into skin, make it more inflamed, or add more dirt and bacteria to the area from your fingers and nails. If you have a blemish that is red and raised, hold an ice cube on it for 20-second intervals for a few minutes to bring down the inflammation, and then apply a dot of a salicylic acid spot treatment and cover with concealer on top. 9. Work regular workouts into your routine. Getting to yoga or spin class can have a positive effect on your skin as well as your mood and body, because a workout increases circulation, creating that great glow once it's done. Another plus: Working up a sweat can help lower the stress hormone cortisol, which is linked not only to skin aging but breakouts and clogged pores. 10. Don't binge on junk food. We aren't talking about enjoying the occasional DC and bag of chips. If most of your calories are coming from the snack machine, your skin is going to pay the price. "More studies are pointing toward carbs as the bad guys for skin," explains Dr. Fusco. "Sugar, white bread, pasta, cake, and candy may speed up glycation in skin." (Glycation is when sugar molecules latch onto cells, including those in skin, and cause them to become malformed and accelerate the breakdown of collagen.) What you see in the mirror: loss of radiance, more noticeable lines, and skin that doesn't look as supple. Overdoing it with carbs and dairy has been linked to acne as well. Instead, eat a well balanced diet full of non-processed, nutritionally dense foods (think green veggies, fresh fruit, yogurt, lean protein, plus nuts and seeds) to make sure you skin stays breakout-free, supple, and on point. 11. Gently exfoliate. Depending on your skin type, use a chemical peel like a glycolic acid or AHA, soft scrub, or try derma-planing (when you glide a special razor over skin in downward strokes) to remove dead skin for a glowy, glass-like finish. Exfoliating one or two days a week is enough. 12. Wear sunglasses year-round. "Sunglasses have multiple important protective effects," says Dr. Karen. "Not only can they protect your actual eyes from UV-inflicted damage both acute and long-term, but they also protect the fragile surrounding skin against fine lines and brown spots." Plus, the less you're forced to squint, the less repetitive muscle movement in that area. The result: no crow's feet. 13. Clean your phone daily. And don't press it directly against your skin when talking either. "Your phone is a breeding ground for germs," explains Dr. Fusco. 14. Apply a face mask weekly. If your skin is on the drier side, opt for a moisturizing mask that contains glycerin or hyaluronic acid such as Eve Lom Moisture Mask. If you're more oil-prone, then alternate between an exfoliating mask and a clay-based treatment like Dr.Jart+ Dermaclear Trans-Foam Trio. For those with combination skin, try multi-masking and apply what you need, where you need it (such as detoxing clay on your nose and chin, and a hydrating mask on your forehead and cheeks). 15. Get ample sleep. Put your devices to bed (preferably in another room) an hour before you tuck in. "The goal is to try to unplug, shut down any connection, and just allow yourself to sleep and fully, fully rest. Ideally, get eight hours of sleep uninterrupted," Dr. Karen adds. "You want to enter the deep sleep that allows your mind, body, and skin to repair." Night, gorgeous! Sources from http://www.cosmopolitan.com |
